Colorado Mesoscale Discussion

Areas affected…eastern Colorado…western Kansas…far
northeastern New Mexico…and parts of the Oklahoma Panhandle

Concerning…Winter mixed precipitation

Valid 271636Z – 272030Z

SUMMARY…Areas of light to moderate winter precipitation (freezing
rain and sleet) will affect the region through the afternoon.

DISCUSSION…Radar and satellite imagery indicated deepening and
lightning-producing convection across portions of east-central New
Mexico, with other areas of precipitation spreading northward across
the remainder of the discussion area. This precipitation was
occurring as a result of low-level warm advection atop a shallow
cold airmass, with surface temperatures of 27-32 degrees across much
of the discussion area. Precipitation should fall mostly as freezing
rain given the present warm layer in point forecast soundings rooted
at around 750 hPa, though slightly cooler temperatures aloft may
result in snow and sleet in areas closer to the I-70 corridor. This
regime should persist throughout the next several hours, though some
insolation/surface warming may result in temperatures climbing above
32F especially across the southern extent of the region. Ice
accumulations are expected – especially in areas that reside under
heavier convection especially as deeper convection moves
north-northeastward out of New Mexico. Accumulations of 0.02
in/hour or greater cannot be ruled out in these areas.
