Areas affected…eastern Nebraska…far southeast South
Dakota…northwest Iowa…southern Minnesota
Concerning…Heavy snow
Valid 262323Z – 270530Z
SUMMARY…Heavy snow will continue and develop across parts of
eastern Nebraska into southern Minnesota as the surface low tracks
northeast. Snowfall rates of 1-2 inches per hour are likely tonight.
DISCUSSION…A strong surface cyclone is deepening over the central
Plains under a strong upper-level shortwave trough. An associated
surface low situated in eastern Kansas will track along falling
pressure to the northeast as the upper-level trough moves into the
Midwest tonight. Isentropic lift and frontogenesis will continue to
the north of the surface low with the greatest overlap stretching
from eastern Nebraska through northwest Iowa into southern
Minnesota. Additionally, mid-level lapse rates of 7-8 C/km will
result in instability in the dendritic growth zone and isolated
lightning. Overall, 1-2 inches per hour snowfall rates are expected
with 15-25 mph sustained surface winds.
