South Dakota Mesoscale Discussion

Areas affected…Northeast CO…Northwest KS…Central/Eastern NE

Concerning…Heavy snow

Valid 261658Z – 262300Z

SUMMARY…Snowfall rates are expected to gradually increase over the
next several hours from northeast CO into central/eastern NE.
Snowfall rates of 1″/hr are anticipated with rates near 2″/hr
possible across south-central NE.

DISCUSSION…Recent surface analysis placed a low over the southern
CO/KS border with a warm front extending west-southwestward across
northern OK and then back northeastward across southern/central MO
into southern IL. This low is expected to quickly move northeastward
this afternoon while the parent upper system becomes increasingly
negatively tilted. As this occurs, the warm conveyor branches off
and begins to wrap around the deepening upper low. Strong warm-air
advection/frontogenesis associated with this evolution will be
maximized across the central Plains, contributing to the development
a band of heavy snow from far northeast CO across northwest KS and
central/eastern NE.

Snowfall rates around 1″/hr are probable within this band with
occasional instances of 2″/hr possible, particularly across
south-central NE around 21Z.
