South Dakota Mesoscale Discussion

Areas affected…North Central Nebraska and South Central South
Dakota

Concerning…Severe Thunderstorm Watch 550…

Valid 050007Z – 050130Z

The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 550
continues.

SUMMARY…The severe threat continues for WW 550, with damaging
winds and severe hail the primary threats.

DISCUSSION…Regional radar continues to show two clusters of
multicellular storms within WW 550. One cluster, which has exhibited
weak/transient embedded supercellular characteristics, has
propagated into Grant and Hooker counties in west-central Nebraska
and has weakened somewhat on the latest scans. Although the
kinematic/thermodynamic environment remains favorable for severe
storms, particularly in the short term, and thus may allow these
storms to pulse up, shallow boundary layer moisture and boundary
layer cooling should lead to eventual decay of this activity.

Farther northwest, another multicellular/embedded supercellular
cluster has moved out of south-central South Dakota into
northeastern portions of Cherry county Nebraska. This cluster has
exhibited episodic intensification, producing a few severe wind
gusts from Bennett county South Dakota into Cherry county. Richer
boundary-layer moisture across eastern sections of the watch area,
yielding near 2500 J/kg of MLCAPE, within marginal deep-layer shear
(35-40 kt eff. bulk shear) may allow this activity to persist for a
few more hours, with damaging winds and perhaps some severe hail
remaining the primary threats.
