Hart Ranch Mesoscale Discussion

Areas affected…Portions of far eastern WY…far northwestern
NE…much of SD…and far southern ND

Concerning…Heavy snow

Valid 300848Z – 301445Z

SUMMARY…Heavy snow, with rates of 1-2 inches per hour, will likely
occur this morning.

DISCUSSION…A surface low over western NE will continue slowly
eastward this morning while gradually deepening. Strong low-level
warm advection is occurring to the northeast of this low as a
large-scale upper trough over the western states consolidates into
an upper low over the northern/central Plains. Pronounced low-level
ascent associated with the warm advection regime has fostered the
development of a precipitation band arcing from far eastern WY
across SD. Most of this precipitation is occurring as moderate to
heavy snow across western/central SD based on recent surface
observations and radar imagery. As the mid-latitude cyclone develops
eastward, this heavy snow band will likely become oriented southwest
to northeast from far eastern WY across much of SD, and into far
southern ND. Snowfall rates of 1-2 inches per hours should be common
as strong lift occurs through the dendritic growth zone and with
saturation of nearly the entire atmospheric column. This band should
shift slowly northward through the morning. Heavy snow potential
will likely be more limited across eastern SD as slightly warmer
low-level temperatures will tend to at least partially melt the
frozen hydrometeors.
