Day 1 Severe Weather Outlook

Valid 071300Z – 081200Z

Isolated thunderstorms are possible today mainly over Utah and
western Washington.

A shortwave trough is near the Pacific Northwest coast this morning,
and will deamplify as it continues northeastward. Cool temperatures
aloft with this feature as well as daytime heating may result in
isolated showers/thunderstorms during the day, but surface
convergence will remain very weak.

To the southeast, a surface trough will develop from southern ID
into central NV during the afternoon, with a wind shift proceeding
east into UT after 00Z. Heating as well as cool temperatures aloft
will steepen lapse rates, with minimal instability developing and
supporting isolated thunderstorms. Weak instability will likely
preclude any severe wind threat despite marginally favorable
deep-layer shear.

Elsewhere, high pressure will maintain stable conditions over the
central and eastern CONUS.
