Colorado Mesoscale Discussion

Areas affected…Northeast CO…Southern NE Panhandle…Southwest
NE…Northwest KS

Concerning…Heavy snow

Valid 260834Z – 261330Z

SUMMARY…An increase in snow rates is expected later this morning,
with 1 inch per hour possible within the strongest bands.

DISCUSSION…At 0830Z, heavy snow was ongoing across the CO Front
Range into southeast WY, with an expanding precipitation shield
noted further east into east-central/northeast CO and the southern
NE Panhandle. As the amplifying upper trough continues to move
across western/central CO and the attendant surface cyclone slowly
shifts eastward across the southern High Plains, increasing
large-scale ascent will support intensifying precipitation into the
Plains of northeast CO and adjacent portions of NE and northwest KS.
Temperature/dewpoint spreads were still 10-15 degrees F at 08Z
across portions of southwest NE/northwest KS, but the column should
rapidly cool and moisten over the next 1-2 hours, supporting
increasing snow rates with at least localized areas of 1″/hour
possible.
